Middle Ages: Feudal System
The Feudal System separated people into four classes; Kings, Nobles, Knights and Peasants. The King was the highest class, and the Nobles were one class lower (and so on). The Feudal system was somewhat of a cycle.
The King provided protection to all of the lower "classes" in return for their work.

Obligations of Each Class
Obligations of the King: To provide protection to his people, as well as provide land for use in each class.
Obligations of the Nobles: To Provide knights to the king for military use.
Obligations of the Knights: To provide protection for the kingdom and military service.
Obligations of the Peasants: To cultivate crops (and share them with the rest of the Kingdom as dues).
